Kannauj has been making attar — India’s traditional perfume — for over a thousand years. It is the fragrance capital of the country, home to distilleries that have been passed down through generations, producing some of the most extraordinary natural scents in the world.
This free factory tour at Puja Perfumery takes you through the entire attar distillation process using the traditional Deg Bhapka method — one of the oldest perfume-making techniques in the world and a UNESCO-recognised traditional craft.
The Deg Bhapka process involves placing flowers and water in a large copper vessel called the Deg, which is then heated. Steam carrying the flower essence passes through a bamboo pipe called a Chonga into the Bhapka — a receiving vessel filled with sandalwood oil — where the fragrance is slowly absorbed over days. The result is some of the purest, most extraordinary attar produced anywhere on earth.
Rose and mitti attar distillation are available year round. Mitti attar — the fragrance of first rain on dry earth — is one of the most unique and extraordinary scents in existence, made nowhere else in the world quite like it is in Kannauj. Additional seasonal flowers may also be in process during your visit — a pleasant surprise depending on when you come.
