Barren Island Active Volcano Cruise — Andaman & Nicobar Islands

An overnight cruise to India’s only active volcano — one of the rarest experiences in the country.

Description:
Barren Island is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia. It sits alone in the Bay of Bengal, 135 kilometres northeast of Port Blair — a solitary volcanic cone that has been erupting intermittently since at least the 18th century. Its most recent major eruption cycle began in 1991 and has continued in episodes since, making it one of the most dynamic geological features in the Indian Ocean.

This two-day experience begins with a full guided day in Port Blair — the Cellular Jail, Samudrika Naval Marine Museum, Ross Island, and Corbyn’s Cove — before boarding the overnight cruise at Haddo Wharf at 9PM. As dawn breaks on the open sea, Barren Island rises ahead. The vessel circles the island, giving guests an extended view of the smouldering crater, the jet-black lava cliffs, and the extraordinary landscape that has been shaped by centuries of eruption.

This is not a conventional tour. It is the rarest kind of travel — a journey to a place that almost no one in India has ever seen.

Day 1 Itinerary:

  • 9:00 AM — Hotel pickup Port Blair
  • Cellular Jail — the emotional anchor of any Andaman visit
  • Samudrika Naval Marine Museum — coral, marine life, tribal history, geological context for the volcanic cruise ahead
  • Ross Island — ferry crossing, colonial ruins, banyan-swallowed buildings, deer in the old bakery
  • Corbyn’s Cove Beach — late afternoon by the sea
  • Haddo Wharf — cruise check-in
  • 9:00 PM — Cruise departs
