Hampi in a Day — Karnataka
The ruins of Vijayanagara — one of the greatest empires in Indian history, frozen in stone.
Description:
Hampi was once the second largest city in the world. Capital of the Vijayanagara Empire from the 14th to 16th centuries, it was a city of over half a million people — a centre of trade, learning, and extraordinary architecture at a time when most of Europe was still rebuilding from the plague.
In 1565 the city was sacked, its buildings demolished, its people scattered. What remained were the stones — and the stones are extraordinary.
This full-day guided tour takes you through the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, from the iconic Vittala Temple with its stone chariot and musical pillars, to the Virupaksha Temple that has stood continuously for over a thousand years, to the royal quarter’s palaces, elephant stables, and bath houses. An expert guide brings each site alive with the history, mythology, and architectural detail that you would otherwise walk right past.
